anyone know much about Dyslexia

#1 Unread post by Gillybean » Sun Nov 14, 2010 5:05 pm

does anyone know anything about Dyslexia?

just wondered as I am looking into Dyslexia as part of Abigail's problems and see lots of similar traits and just wondered if anyone else had similar experiences

these i have noticed

she misses out words when reading
she changes little words when reading i.e 'and' to at or 'the' to and etc
she refused to read at all in reception year and would get very upset when a book was put in front of her
she seems to get slower sometimes when reading but not all the time
she writes things in school for a project or whatever and misses out key information or the things she has written don't make sense
her handwriting is messy
she finds learning the times tables hard and so far takes about 3/4 weeks to learn each one so she is still on her 3x 4 weeks later
she has problems understanding the clock times homework she just got but her younger brother just looked at it and got it right straight away
Has difficulty sometimes putting her thoughts onto paper or telling us what she means
dependent on her fingers to count
her writing can be repetitive
Poor memory for sequences, and unexperienced facts & information.
Easily frustrated or emotional about school, reading, writing, or math.
sometimes reverses b and d

I have been on the DORE website and done an online assessment for Dyslexia for Abigail, obviously it isn't a diagnosis but it came back with a high probability that she had it

obviously she has behavior problems too and gets easily lead, excited and can be very boisterous, rude, climb and run around excessively in situations she is expected to be quiet in, and be impulsive, easily frustrated, dislikes school, lies and sometimes steals, hyper-talkative in class and i have spoken to a ADHD specialist on a forum who emailed me the conners rating scale and after i filled it in and emailed it back his results were that she had ADHD obviously I am not taking it as gospel as I am waiting for our follow up appointment in January but I am thinking that she may have dyslexia traits too which would also explain the loss of concentration and extreme dislike for school and anything to do with work.

I think that traits of a condition or disorder can often either scare or be misinterpreted so think u r best speaking to a professional first before u look into anything u wouldn't want to label ur child unnecessarily
my middle brother showed traits of What u would consider as dyslexia but all it was after assessments was that he just isn't academic and didn't really enjoy school as he found it hard to understand and get the concept of things x

my sister is reg disabled because she has such bad dyslexia.
Kris and Rachel might remember Nathalie wearing blue glasses at school?

while on some things it does sound like my sister on the other hand it can just be a child being difficult. its a hard one to call.
to help you out a little i could list a few things nathalie couldnt and still to this day cant do.

nathalie cant spell many words at all. ie nothing would be spelt nuffink and silly ones any =ne. its kind of reading a different language.
she also puts lots of words and numbers round wrong way. and some times mixed up ie wants number 3 would end up 8. and d=b, n and m are used in same way also.
she cant tell time at all! so much so when she had Via my nan bought her a watch that set a alarm when needed milk and when was poorly we programme it for when kids need meds.
she cant deal with money. as cant count.
she doesnt know left from right.
she doenst have and co-ordnation
she has a lazy eye (not sure thats anything to do with it???)

but on the other side. she has a fantasic ear for music.
she can listen to a piece (say for arguements sake on the piano) and she can play it, cant read music but can play buy ear.
and can listen to a peice of music and remember the words pretty much first time.

she is a fab hairdresser as can use her hands. but then cant be a hairdresser as needs to know time of appointments how much been paid.

i would have thought the school would have picked up on this! its very common these days! ask her teachers they will know if she has any issues. ask. i would.

thanks ladies any problems she has are only just being looked at because her first school refused to consider any learning disabilities even though she refused to do work and couldnt be assessed academically so 3 years down the line we are slowly getting her assessed but the school say they cant test for dyslexia till she is 8, obviously she will be 8 in a few weeks so hopefully they will start the process soon

My friends child was tested for Dyslexia but came back clear and she can be a handful. She recently went for an eye test and now has to wear glasses all the time and seems a lot better at school. Have you had Abigails eyes tested?
