Baby hates tummy time

#1 Unread post by weezypops » Mon Apr 22, 2013 12:11 pm

Did any of you have babies who hated tummy time? Felix and Iris both started to like it pretty quickly and were holding their head up well by three or four weeks, rolling over from front to back at a week etc. Although Dexter is strong and has good neck strength/head control and will hold his head up for a while if he's lying on me, he really hates being put on his tummy and just cries and flails around. I'm not overly worried as he's still young so I know they say just a couple of minutes is good, but it's so different to the older two! If you had a baby who hated tummy time, how did you help them get used to it? We've tried lying down so he can see us, putting a mirror in front of him etc. but he's still not happy!

Any tips?

Josh hated it because of his reflux and it was obviously uncomfortable. We didn't force the issue. With Alexa she didn't like it either but we perservered for 5 mins a day and gradually increased it. As soon as she could roll over she would go back on her back. Lol.
Have you tried propping him up with a rolled up towel so the pressure isn't on his tummy?

No, will give that a go and see if it helps. He is quite windy so I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Maybe he just doesn't like lying on his front, in the same way as some adults, including me, don't.
This isn't something that we had to do in the 'old days', so I might be talking rubbish.
Den can and often does, sleep on his front whereas I'm on my side or back.

Sometimes windy babies hate it. It'd be like us eating a meal and then laying on our tummy. Very uncomfy. By rolling a towel or blanket and propping him up it takes the pressure off.

Neither of my boys nor my nephew liked tummy time so I rarely done it - I think that was because they were all windy too

I swing between feeling like it doesn't matter too much as he's lifting his head on me etc. and is obviously strong and worrying because he's nowhere near what Iris and Felix were doing at this age. But then I recently read that the average age for rolling over is four months which I didn't realise so I think F&I were freakishly early and we shouldn't expect anything from Dexter at this age!

We had hardly any tummy time either! Just didn't like it! I remember getting really worried with William.

Mason hated tummy time aswell. We did try but he would just scream.
