Soft Ice Cream

#1 Unread post by lea-marie » Thu Jan 03, 2013 9:41 am

Seems a random post in the height of Winter, but it is going somewhere, I promise!

I have read in several sources that it is advised to avoid soft ice creams during pregnancy (ice cream van etc) and it struck me yesterday in Pizza Hut when the kids ran over to the Ice Cream Factory (and by kids, that includes Andy lol) that this would come under the same remit, but then I got thinking more, and would this also include things like McDonalds/Burger King milkshakes?!

As an avid lover of these products, I am now in turmoil - does anyone have an answer?!

I think it's one of those things to avoid because there's a greater risk of listeria, but as with all these things - soft cheeses, pate etc. you'll probably be okay if you really want to have one, it's just best to keep it to a minimum!

When I was preg - I was told (and watched a docu on it) that the ice cream/mcflurry/milkshake is absolutely fine - but the machine that it comes from can be extremely nasty so avoid dodgy shops and ice cream vans if you think they don't clean the pipes thoroughly! McDonalds are fine (the documentary was probably paid by them tho!)

That makes sense, I'd assume a machine cleaned less often would be more likely to harbour listeria and pass it through the ice cream. I imagine places like McDonalds, while they can be faulted in many ways, do have to keep things hygienic!
