Smoke Alarms Campaign
-----------------------------
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is urging everyone in Essex to make sure that they have properly installed and fully working smoke alarms in their homes.

Over the last year more than a quarter of the house fires dealt with in Essex were to homes with no smoke alarms.

Between July 2012 and July 2013 ECFRS 871 house fires and of these 226 did not have a working smoke alarm.

Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick said: “Smoke alarms are proven life savers. They give vital warning at the first sign of fire giving everyone time to get safely out before calling us in.

“There is no excuse for any home not having a smoke alarm. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service provide home fire safety visits completely free of charge. A technician will come to your home, carry out a full home fire safety inspection and fit smoke alarms where they are needed.”

To arrange a free home fire safety visit, call 0845 601 2495 or email webmaster@essex-fire.gov.uk

DO Fenwick said: “The home fire safety visit does not have to be for you. If you are concerned that a relative or neighbour could benefit from a visit, then do not hesitate to get in touch with us.”

We had this done a couple of years ago in the property we rent. They fitted a free smoke alarm which is supposed to last for 10 years and doesnt have replaceable batteries - well it started beeping the other day after only being fitted for just over 2 years. They gave me the contact number of the suppliers and they are sending me out a replacement unit. Very happy with the service bearing in mind it is all free.

We too took up this offer a few years ago.
Two alarms were fitted that are much better quality than the ones we had, they cost about £25 each in Tesco and don't go off at every toast burn.
They also checked around the house and advised us to get rid of the fire extinguisher and get a fire blanket instead.
