Local Karate Teacher Listed on 'Happy List 2014'

Marc Grayston, Chief Instructor of Maru Karate Kai has been listed on The Independent on Sunday's 'Happy List 2014'. The list is the seventh annual list prodeuced by The Independent, highlighted 100 people around the country who, without thought of personal gain, give back and help others, rather that themselves. Marc was nominated by his wife Clair, who runs the karate club with him.

The list was created as an antidote to the rich lists and celebrity lists, embracing those who give huge amounts of time to volunteering and raising money.

Marc founded Maru Karate Kai in 2009, teaching karate to kids across Basildon, including staging free sessions for disadvantaged children, free self defence lessons for women and fundraising for the Basildon Hospital Charity.

Marc is listed with 99 other incredible volunteers who have given so much to the community, including the late Stephen Sutton, who raised just shy of £4m for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

On hearing about his place on the list Marc said 'I am incredibly humbled to even be mentioned in the same breath as some of the inspirational people on this list, but this is really a recognition for the kids who take part in our classes and the ladies who attended our self-defence classes. They are the real stars.'

The chosen 100 will be invited to a party held in London in their honour later in the Summer.
