Times Tables

#1 Unread post by rachel jane » Sun Jan 06, 2013 9:07 pm

Right firstly i am ashamed to admit it but i am sooooooooooooooooooooo rubbish at times tables it takes me ages and i wish i was like john and edie where it takes them seconds.
I really don't want connie to be like me in that way so i would like some ideas of games i can play with her to teach her to them. Shes not struggling but shes soooo like me i just want to make sure she knows them. I have bought a singing cd and thats helping. I don't know what its like at your schools but they only start the times tables in year 2 at ours.
I have posters but she doesn't look at them and i have to make her do the cd with me.
Any ideas?

William likes to just sit and do ten sums after breakfast. He thinks it is fun and it is part of his routine now.
Well not everyday as sometimes he does money or time or just adding etc but as I say it is just routine for him.

Bribes worked for me as a child! I too hate times tables!

Colouring in a 100 number square in the patterns for each times table?

Or tricks? Like nine times use your fingers and put down your 4th finger for 4x9 and read the answer so 3 before the put down
Finger and 6 after. Always amazes kids and interests them.

Ask her teacher for ideas?

Just doing the sums and jack going over them - he loves maths

We have been told he needs to know up to his 6 times tables by the end of year 2 :/

Felix quite likes being given a challenge in the same way as it sounds like William does. He likes doing things like counting before bed, where he'll say he's going to count to 100 in tens, or 40 in fours, which is times table related, though probably a bit simple for her.

Or what about some online games? These sites have some:

Felix's class is working on a year 2 curriculum but because they are mixed the groups are quite varied in ability. Felix is in one of the two 'middle achievers' groups (based on yr 2 work) and they've done 2, 5, and 10. When I was in a few weeks ago they were doing it and his teacher told me afterwards that he'd given Felix some extension work of 3s and 4s too. The high achievers group was doing 3s and 4s and the extension group 3s, 4s and 6s but the low achievers group just 2 and 10s I think.

He does but I don't think the year 1 classes do anything beyond doubling things and counting in tens, from what I gather, he just does it because they're considered a year 2 class.

I don't really know what they are doing? I know by the end of year one - children should know 2, 5 and 10 (I think) However - I am not sure what they do at school and what he is just able to do tho? He comes out with things like - there are 4 of us so we we need 6 each which is 24 altogether and there are 18 sweets in this bag mummy so we get 6 each (between three obviously) - so as I say - I think it is actually just stuff that he has picked up from using everyday maths rather than what they are actually being taught but then I am not sure?

Alexa does them in her class. She does 2,3,4,5,10 because 6 and 8 are an extension of 3 and 4 or something.
They also do division.

Josh does them up to 11 in his class.

Its obviously me then Kris as we went to the same schools.x
Again i can't believe how different schools are as Ted has only started doing his times tables in the last couple of months and eventhough they start in year 3 i would actually say its only in year 4 that they have really starting teaching it everyday.

It does amaze me how differently different schools do things. In Felix's 6/4 aren't taught as an extension of 3/2 but as separate things which makes sense to me. Although 4 is 2x2 so in theory is just doubling your answer, it makes it a much longer sum to work out if they have to do, say 7x4 and work it out as 7x2=14, then 14x2=28 rather than just knowing 7x4=28 which I think is the goal of learning it by rote etc.
