This 55 acre reserve was acquired by Essex Wildlife Trust in 1993 and is one of the largest remaining areas of ancient woodland in SE Essex. Fantastic spring flowers and a site where the Heath Fritillary is flourishing.
What to look for:
Much work has taken place at Pound Wood to improve the nature reserve for wildlife, this includes coppicing to allow flora and fauna to flourish. Clearance has taken place under the power cables within the nature reserve and this now offers wide areas of open space where the rare Heath Fritillary butterfly flourishes.
The wood includes Sweet Chestnut and Birch occur on the plateau and ridges, Hornbeam and Holly on the slopes and Hornbeam, Ash, Willow, Aspen, and Hazel in the three stream valleys. In places there are many Wild Service trees. The south west section is very old secondary woodland, almost indistinguishable from the ancient woodland.
There are fine early mediaeval woodbanks, several ponds and many dells. In the spring there is a fantastic display of Bluebells and visitors can also see Common Cow-wheat, Yellow Archangel, Wood Spurge and Figwort where light can penetrate this once neglected wood.
Accessible at all times but to minimise disturbance to wildlife, please keep to the designated paths. Dogs allowed if under effective control.
Public Transport – An hourly bus service (excluding Sundays) serves Daws Heath Road. More frequent services run along Rayleigh Road and pass Woodmans Arms PH (400m to the west via Daws Heath Road).
