Press Release for immediate release:

A Better Start Southend announces the return of Raising Southend; a Festival of Conversations, taking place 12 to 26 October 2022

Raising Southend; a Festival of Conversations is back for a second year running with a series of free innovative and exciting events for local families, children and professionals from Wednesday 12 to Wednesday 26 October.

The two-week-long festival, organised by A Better Start Southend, will feature events and activities across Southend aimed at families who are expecting a baby or with children under the age of four - as well as for professionals, partners and organisations who support them.

A Better Start Southend is a partnership of local organisations that have years of experience working with families and young children. We work closely with our ABSS Parent Champion volunteers who help to co-produce our services by providing a voice for the communities we work within.

In 2021 the event attracted more than 300 local families and professionals, this year the fringe-style festival is returning with more activities than before - with events hosted by local organisations creating opportunities for conversations between families, community groups and services in Southend.

The free programme will feature more than 25 activities throughout the festival's duration, some events will require pre-registration, which will open in September. The bumper programme of events will be organised around the themes of:

Early Years Activity & Wellbeing
Food, Diet & Nutrition
Arts & Creativity
Environment & Sustainability
Mental Health & Wellbeing
Special Educational Needs & Disability
Community, Skills & Home Safety
Storytelling & Reading
Pregnancy & Early Years Health
Tara Poore, Director of A Better Start Southend says:

‘We’re incredibly proud to work with local children, parents and those who provide services and activities to families, to design and deliver this year’s Festival of Conversations. Southend should be the best place to be a parent and raise a child, and our Festival of Conversations creates opportunities to talk with each other about how we can make this vision for Southend come true whilst having fun.’

Rosanna, a Parent Champion, attended one of the many events held last year and said it ‘was amazing, great for all ages; the boys especially enjoyed the paper cannons. I am looking forward to going to the Festival of Conversations with my boys again this year.’

There will be events to suit everyone; from practitioners to families, with a full programme to be announced - events will include:

Discover New Boredom Busters: a play session with useful tips and tricks and practical ideas for quick children’s activities you can do anywhere at any time.
Explore Natural Play: a fun outdoor session on how to replace plastic items with natural, homemade, or repurposed materials suitable for parents and children.
Let’s Get Talking About Mental Health: set within the beautiful gardens of local charity Trust Links, this event will provide space to talk about mental health and what it means to you.
Nursery Rhymes & Story Time: let your imagination run wild during our interactive nursery rhymes & story time sessions
Babbling Babies & Talking Tiddlers: we welcome you to sample sessions from our fun and engaging speech & language specialists
Free registration for the full programme of events will open in September, with more information to be found at abetterstartsouthend.co.uk/festival.
The festival has been organised in collaboration with Bromfield Events, a locally based production company working with organisations that make a positive social impact on its communities and the world around them.
