Hi Cassie

Just to keep you updated - James has an assessment with the speech therapist on Tuesday. He is so behind where he should be - The only 2 syllables that he joins together is nee-naw! (as in emergency vehicle) :( Wish us luck - not sure he will play along and do what he is asked as he is really stubborn - have you any tips to help us during the assessment?

Hello!

Happy new year! Hope you've had a lovely Christmas too.

Good luck on Tuesday! The good thing about your appointment will be that the Speech & Language Therapist will see the skills that James has and will help you to support him to build on those and/or learn new ones.

A couple of tips:
1. Try to relax; As you already know - it's quite normal for parents to feel nervous at the first assessment, but remember that you are the most skilled person to talk about your son. After the assessment, the Speech & Language therapist will be offering you suggestions and ideas on how to help but be honest about the amount of time you can spend doing any activities that s/he gives you.

2. James is very little still and so it is likely that the Speech & Language Therapist will assess him by playing with him. He may not even notice that he's being assessed so don't worry too much about how he will perform! Just mention that what she is seeing is normal for him or if he is behaving differently so she understands. If he's being different - try and give a few examples of what you might see at home instead.

I hope this is helpful? If you'd rather a chat away from these boards feel free to e-mail us at info@cdspeechtherapy.co.uk or give us a call on: 07510 067 442 and we'd be happy to talk anything through with you.

Wishing you all the best on Tuesday!

Cassie :)
