Drs and repeat prescription advice please

#1 Unread post by Jenn » Thu Mar 08, 2012 7:45 am

Hi everyone

So we had a terrible night with Williams croup. Went and got his puffer out that we were given - and I checked the Use by date - for the first time ever and it was out of date! Mike took the decision to use it as it was either that or A+E (and last time we used it - we we didn't know it was out of date).

Anyway - really need a new one. Do I need to get a drs appointment to get it? I take it I do as repeat prescriptions take 3 day so would be Monday? Would I need to take William with me? I don't even know what it is called - will that matter?

Feel so stupid - hate the drs and everything to do with it!

Thanks

Jenn, depends if the script is for a repeat then you shouldnt need to see a doctor. Might be worth phoning and explain to the doctors that it has run out of date and you hadnt realised and they may get it rushed through for you. If you use the same chemist all the time, it might be worth speaking to them as they can give them out as an emergency and you just need to take the prescription in when you have it. Most chemists are really good if you use the same one regularly.

I would phone and speak to the receptionist and see what she says, with our surgery we would probably ask you to see a doctor if you hadnt had it for 2 years. But then every surgery works differently.

Thanks Gina - Knew you would help!

Just back from the drs. (and not crying woo hoo!) She is going to ask the dr if we need to be seen or not or whether he will just do us a prescription. Although i have to wait until 5pm to find out! :(

Dont know why you have to wait until 5pm to find out. At our surgery we have a telephone consultation with the doctor about 11.30 and they usually advise by then or we can let you know that morning. Strange!

I always put repeat prescriptions in for the boys pumps and if they want to see the boys first the receptionist phones

Jenn - how did you get on?

If he has only had the inhaler once, then I know our surgery would want to see him to review him.

Thank you for asking -x-

I rang at 4 and was told that the dr had done a repeat prescription for him and to go pick it up.

We did - and he was fine when we left the house but by the time we got to the surgery (not very far) William was in a right state, wheezing and achey and so pale I thought he was about to faint! I know the cold/damp can affect it but this was odd and very scary! The lady in the chemist was even concerned and jumped our prescription order up the queue!

He is sleeping now but very cough-y - horrid barky cough!

I don't know what to do? His temperature is 40 degrees? He is in a state but his breathing is ok as croup lets it be. Mike isn't back yet. I know Mike will say - wait and see how the calpl works and let him sleep it off and William has had higher tmps than this and been fine at home, sleeping but it just makes you worry when all the sites and things say - panic if 38 degrees or more. I don't know - I hate being home alone when they are ill. He'll be back soon

How long has he been at 40 Jenn? That is high. Croup doesn't produce a fever does it? I think I'd phone NHS Direct for advice seeing as he's having trouble breathing too. He might have a chest infection.

I would call NHS Direct too. It is high, but it could just be a virus or something - when Felix was ill recently his went up to 40 too and he was a state until it came down again. If it doesn't come down you could try giving him some calprofen too - do you have some?
