What did you do before having kids?

#1 Unread post by weezypops » Wed Nov 30, 2011 12:13 pm

Just a random nosy post as I was thinking it would be fun to know what we all did before we became Mums!

My jobs before having kids were mainly research-based. I was a Research Executive at a property journal/website for about four years, and after that a Senior Research Editor for a media intelligence company for two, researching magazines, websites and journalists for the same company that Kester works for. I also spent a year working in a school office and about a year and a half working as a Media Coder for the same company as Kester too (though some of this was after having Felix).

Before that I studied History at Goldsmiths College, which is part of the university of London and had various jobs working in pubs, cinemas, shops and factories - standard student stuff!

You?

I worked in the family art/craft/picture framing business.

Before that I was an LSA at a Junior school and had hoped to do on-the-job training and experience to become a teacher (I changed my mind)

Before that I did a BA Combined honours in english and education studies. My job through all of uni and before was obviously working at the family shop!

I ran 2 private day nurseries as well as being a SENCO and Equal opportunities co-ordinator. I specialised in Special needs before having Josh.
Prior to that I used to do Supply cover in schools and nurseries, anything from covering teacher absence to Mid day assistants, and working in a college nursery - all my stuff has been pretty childcare orientated since I was 15!!
I have worked in a video shop before too whilst studying - which was great cause I could see all the new releases without paying and wasnt hugely taxing - lol.

Whilst at College studying child care to become a Children's Nanny I worked at Boots the Chemist. Then when I qualified I worked In a Local Authority Respite Unit in Kent for Children with Disabilities. I was there 11yrs and ended up as a Senior supervising staff etc. Then I did the same job in Surrey for NCH. I worked there for almost 6 years then moved in with Mark here in Essex and did the same work for the Local Authority in a Residential Home for Children with Disabilities in Chelmsford before being moved to a newly opened Respite Unit in Harlow where I worked as a Senior until I went on Maternity leave with Benjamin. After 10 months Mat leave I returned to the Residential Home in Chelmsford part-time (not as a Senior!) between Benjamin and Joshua and will be doing 2-4hrs per week there again from this Friday!!

My first ever job at 16 was in McDonalds, was the only job that fitted around me going to college where I was studying travel and tourism. Left McD's after 3 months though as the management there were horrible.

Managed to get a job in Sainsburys after that, based in the fruit & veg department but responsible for stock checking etc.

Then left Sainsbury's to start an apprenticeship at Lunn Poly which was great as I wanted to work in the travel industry. Was based at the one in Southend near the Royals and stayed there for almost 2 years before moving to the Holiday Hypermarket in Basildon and was there until I left to have Shannon!

I've always worked in retail of some sort, bakeries, clothing, suitcases, cookware and now curtains and bedding. i did a stint in hotels but didn't get on with the shifts long hrs. Before having Alex i was in full time management, hopefully will get back into it once kids are at school full time.

My first job was rossis ice cream on the front and then uncle toms cabin. Then I worked at Asda on the deli, fish, pizza counter which I loved.
I then went and worked abroad in turkey for 6 mths and then came back and was a nanny and then went back to turkey but didn't last the whole season and came back and worked at the gold centre and as a nanny and then went to Australia. Came back and worked at st christophers and then at a nursery where I was senco and deputy and I also worked at simply blues. Then i fell pregnant and had Connie and I did go back to the nursery for a bit but then left and worked at ocean beach and the pipe of port.

No Jenn, grew up in Pitsea and moved to Braintree when Shannon was 1. Only moved that way as private renting was cheaper at the time. Stayed there until our landlady wanted her house back so had to go on the council list and as we were classed as homeless had to take the first thing offered to us which was our flat in Silver End.

Have considered moving back towards Pitsea again but the girls are settled here etc x
