Bleeding Nipple

#1 Unread post by XxJack~AcexX » Wed Mar 09, 2011 6:39 pm

Hi ya could you please tell me what this could be?
I had a nice warm shower and I noticed on the towel some blood. I noticed it from my nipple. Sorry if this sounds horrid.
More typically comes out when I squeeze it and is blatently there. Ive put a breast pad in for now.
Many thanks. x

It could be from a part of your nipple that is cracked from being pregnant before. I would resist squeezing the blood from the nipple in case it gets worse and go and see / phone your MW or GP. It might need a bit of Lanolin cream (I think thats what it is) or may be linked to a mild infection?
Best to get it checked. x

Thanks hun it was coming from the nipple itself where the milk comes from. I didnt carry on squeezing it, I just wanted to make sure it was coming out of there iykwim.
My dads partner is a qualified mw and is now a health visitor. She said for me to call MB1 as she hasnt come accross this before.
I did so and the mw there said the same that she hadnt come accross it and it could be hormones, or could be a blocked milk duct that would need to be seen to and to call my doc to be examined.
Arghh hate him but its gotta be done.

I have something called duct ecxtasia (sp) which causes my ducts to crack and milk etc to form fatty deposits under the skin. Sometimes I get bleeding nipples and I have to manually express until it is gone otherwise it will form a blockage and then I get mastitus.

I suffered with this before becoming a mummy from a very young age strangly, but it is quite rare.

Ohh err hun.
Do you think mine could be along those lines? The fact that my midwives were unknown of this and for me to see my gp.
Arghhhh if its not one thing its another x

Its suprising that MB1 MW's havent a clue what it could be - I did a quick google search earlier and it does seem to be a common thing asked. Most say its a result of cracked nipples or an infection.
I wouldnt advocate expressing yet, without medical advice though Gemma.

I had cracked and bleeding nipples when I was pregnant with Iris but it was in the really early days and seemed to be because they were painful generally and I was still breastfeeding Felix. Could it just be that your boobs are gearing up for the milk but being a bit sensitive? Are both sides bleeding or just the one?

If your GP can't help it might be worth calling the National Breastfeeding helpline for advice as hopefully they'd have heard of it.

I agree with Michelle about not expressing yet though.

Thanks lovelys.
No I wouldnt express anything, ouchies!
Im going to keep an eye on things. I do feel maybe it is to do with the milk or cracked.
I feel rather sore today so will get some cream as recommended.
Its just one Lou.

He He I keep thinking how different this preg is to Jacks. So many diff things are happening this time round, so im hoping for a good birth  Yeah right! Whereas last time with mr the preg was great but the birth was horrible. x

When I had badly cracked nippes after Iris was born (she was a terror on my boobs that girl, both in pregnancy and afterwards!) what helped me was a combination of lansinoh cream and nipple shells - the cream helps the healing process and acts as a barrier, and the shells keep your bra/top away from the skin so gets some air to them and helps them heal. Ideally being topless for a while helps but that's not always doable!

Thanks Gemma! :) It is fantastic to not feel ill! I know I probably talked about it a lot - but i was so down, I was so depressed with it all but now I feel great! Extremely tired obviously and like 'where does the time go?' but I am not sick anymore!

People at school/swimming who have only known sick me are shocked at how different i am now and how happy and relaxed i am now!

I would recommend lansinoh, leaving it alone and getting it checked by a gp. You can sometimes get a benign nipple discharge when preg or not, as the skin cells lining the milk ducts are shed and leave the body, but this is usually pale or colourless. Bleeding nipples can occur during breastfeeding due to incorrect attachment of the baby to the breast (can happen very quickly and from just one poorly attached feeding session), but blood stained nipple discharge is unusual at any other time and it definately warrants a visit to the gp to be checked out.
