Discover a world of hidden treasures in one of the oldest museums in Britain.
This award-winning museum explores the archaeology, natural history and social history of north-west Essex and the wider world.
There’s something of interest for all the family, our collections include: Ancient Egypt, Archaeology, Ceramics and Glass, Costume and Textiles, Decorative Arts, Geology, Furniture and Woodwork, Local and Social History, Natural History, Toys and World Cultures. From stone axes to Samurai armour, Saxon riches to shields, spears and swords. Take the opportunity to see a glove given away by Mary Queen of Scots on the eve of her execution, and meet an Ancient Egyptian Mummy.
At our family-friendly museum children can excavate in the archaeological sandpit, meet Wallace the Lion (from the famous poem 'The Lion and Albert') or explore the natural history discovery centre.
With a rolling programme of special exhibitions, activities and events throughout the year, there’s always something new to see and do!
Picnic in our grounds next to the ruins of the 12th century Walden Castle or, walk to the centre of the medieval market town where you can shop, eat, relax and explore.
There is a small car park and access for disabled visitors.

Sundays and Bank Holidays 2pm-5pm
(Note: The Museum closes at 4.30pm November-February)

Saffron Walden Museum is taking part in Museum Shop Sunday, on 27 November, which is an international event celebrating the unique shops and products which play a vital role in helping arts, culture, and heritage attractions to survive and thrive.
After the chaos and crazy discounting of Black Friday, Museum Shop Sunday offers an alternative way to do your Christmas shopping and do some good at the same time!
Find original gifts – The museum shop offers bespoke ranges, stocking fillers and unique gifts such as our annual season tickets. All your Christmas shopping dilemmas solved in one go!

This year author Paul Wood will be on hand from 2.30pm to give a talk about his recently updated book From Station Officer Drane, folllowed by a Q&A session and book signing.
