Summer fetes, play days and all sorts of holiday fun for families across Essex







  • Summer of Fun join in with daily animal activities; watch the magnificent bird of prey shows or dash to the outdoor adventure play area. And for wet weather days, take refuge in the Play Barn with fast slides and a multi-level playframe. Or take on Mum and Dad in the Ball Blaster indoor arena.
    Making the countryside fun is all what Barleylands is about. And for all those wannabe farmers, indulge them with a tip to the onsite Discovery Centre, home to vintage tractors and interactive exhibits.
  • Farm-lympics – All the animals are hard at work training for the big event and we hope you are also limbering up in preparation.

Princess Party Wishes

  • Princess Afternoon TeaThere will be Princesses Belle, Cinderella, Moana and Rapunzel at the event! There will be princess meet and greets, live performances of songs, dancing, games and a royal coronation during the event. At the end of the tea, every child will receive a special gift from the princesses!

Chelmsford City Centre

  • Chelmsford Carnival: A long awaited return to the city and fitting finale to the festival. This time it’s a walking parade starting in Admirals Park, travelling through Central & Bell Meadow, over Stonebridge Walk, up the Hight St to finish in Backnang Sq where there will be a host of activities to keep you amused for the afternoon.

  • Play in the Park:  Play in the Park runs at multiple community venues during the Easter and summer school holidays, for children aged between three and 11. Children can join our Playworkers to play, create and take part in fun sports, games and craft activities at a park near you. Some sessions also feature additional activities such as inflatables, reptile handling and scooter lessons.

  • Bubble n Bop: Don’t miss Marsh Farm’s summer children’s festival ‘Bubble ‘n Bop’ it’s bursting with bubbles and exploding with excitement. There will be so much going on including the much loved foam machine, loads of bouncy castles, our brand new train ride, fairground rides & more!



The Beth Chatto Gardens

  • Insect Squad: Hunt out and catch all sorts of bugs and beasties on a morning expedition. Then make your own wild craft creations to take home.
  • Wild scientists: For all you young scientists out there! Enjoy a morning dissecting an owl pellet opening a moth trap and finding out about ferocious freshwater larvae.

Colchester Castle

  • Colchester Castle Is Under Siege! Head to the Castle over the August Bank Holiday weekend and step into an early medieval encampment filled with magic and mystery! This extra special days will be packed with live demonstrations, interactive exhibits and plenty of fun for the whole family.
  • Decoding The Roman Dead: Discover more about Colchester’s Roman past and uncover stories surrounding those who lived and died here almost 2000 years ago! This family-friendly exhibition, will showcase the findings of new, cutting-edge research undertaken in partnership with the University of Reading during 2021.

Colchester Park 

  • Music of the Spheres – Each 90-minute performance starts with dancers and musicians within land-based, transparent spheres and domes moving around the audience – enabling socially-distanced performances and providing a great theatrical spectacle. Musicians perform on flute, violin and accordion, as well as more unusual instruments from around the world such as Tibetan Singing Bowls and a slate xylophone.
    The highlight of the event will see a giant Sphere, the size of a four-storey building, launched onto the Park’s boating lake. Inside, aerial dancer Claire Crook will spin and spiral on silks suspended from the centre. The Sphere performs a ballet on the lake as it moves over the surface of the water controlled by the Eye Music technical team.

  • Royal Gunpowder Mills Open Days! The Royal Gunpowder Mills is once again open to the public. Every Sunday and Bank Holiday until September they will be hosting open days. Visitors are invited to bring their families and picnics and enjoy the cultural and historical site of the Mills, they have light refreshments and plenty of opportunities to spot nature.

Pets’ Corner

  • Visit Pets’ Corner: A 20-minute walk from Harlow Playhouse and you can find yourself at Pets’ corner. A small, friendly farm located in Harlow Town Park. It has a large selection of traditional farm animals, such as rabbits, chickens and ducks, more exotic animals such as Reindeer, Llamas and Alpacas, as well as a number of rare breeds including Middle White pigs. Pets’ Corner is free to enter but welcomes donations in the box on site. You can feed some of the animals for 50p a bag, available from our gift shop.
