It’s been a while since we had a Days Out feature, thanks in no small part to the rotten weather we had all Spring. Grr. Spencer’s Fruit Farm
When Donna contacted me about being a Days Out family she was bursting with ideas, as she was planning some really special trips around the county. I joined them at Spencer’s Fruit farm, just outside Halstead, for some Pick Your Own goodness! Wellies were most definitely required for our tramp around the fields, but the picking was very good and little Harry and Emily (taking some of her first steps!) were entranced by the juicy berries and fruits.
The farm itself is nice and open, with good parking and a farm shop that is full of temptation! Walking through the shop you come out to the open air seating area outside the cafe, where there are mini pedal tractors on a track for littlies, as well as a big tractor to remind you you are on an actual farm.
Fields stretch away to left and right, and all the fruits are clearly signposted and easy to get to. I wouldn’t say this was accessible for anyone not walking – the fields would be impossible with a buggy or wheelchair, but it’s an otherwise lovely experience to tramp through the grass to the fruit of your choice. Entry to the fields is free, and you can take your own punnets and baskets, or use the shop ones. You only pay for what you pick, back at the shop before you leave – and beware, picking the ripest juiciest fruits is a little addictive as a game!
I think Harry may well have found the biggest strawberry I’ve ever seen, a gorgeous example of the fruits the family managed to collect. Now is a really good time to be PYOing in Essex, if you haven’t thought of it before it makes a wonderful morning in wellies!
I’ll let Donna tell you what she thought:
“We had a wonderful and muddy time at Spencer’s Fruit Farm! There were lots of different types of fruit and the kids loved being able to see, and pick them. We enjoyed picking the fruit, and any excess was made into jam when we got home. We bought tasty food from the farm shop, and the staff were friendly. We will definitely be returning throughout the seasons, and were glad the children enjoyed it.
Finally Marie was a great photographer, and our son was particularly taken with her! We are pleased that we got some wonderful photographs of our family, especially as our daughter had only recently started walking. ”
That’s really kind, thanks Donna, and thanks for inviting me along! Remember to get in touch if you’d like to invite me out with your family soon!
