Middletons Steakhouse, Colchester

Middletons Steakhouse is part of a small chain of restaurants around East Anglia and the East Midlands. Their meat is delivered daily from their own butcher in Middleton, Norfolk, which is great if you are concerned about where your food comes from, about sustainability and buying local.

We went along on a Sunday evening after a busy day in Colchester to check out their fixed price menu, and I have to say, we were very impressed! Middletons is a premium steakhouse, with a main menu that includes some really premium steaks, both in terms of cut and price. By no means overly expensive, just somewhere that you would be happy to go for an anniversary meal! The decor is stylish and inviting, the staff welcoming and polite and it has the feel of a decent restaurant.

Middletons are proud of their fixed price menu and with good reason. They offer one course for £7.95, two for £8.95 or three for £9.95, which is amazing value at any restaurant but particular good here given the quality of the food. I had garlic mushrooms, minute steak and tiramisu and my husband opted for the BBQ ribs, steak and then Eton Mess. When the food first arrived I was worried that maybe it wouldn’t be enough but actually it was perfect and left us feeling pleasantly full, rather than absolutely stuffed and uncomfortable, which is how we usually feel after eating out. It was definitely preferable! The mushrooms were delicious and came with sourdough to mop up the creamy sauce, the steak was beautiful and tender, which made me wonder how amazing the more expensive cuts would be! Then the tiramisu was lovely too, a great way to finish the meal. Kester enjoyed his meal too, particularly the ribs.

There is also a kids’ menu which again is great value: £4.95 for a little kids’ meal or £5.95 for a big kids’ version. My three all had garlic bread for starters, Felix and Iris had burgers, which looked lovely and like ‘proper’ burgers, and Dexter had fish goujons, which again looked delicious and he polished off. In fact all three of them ate everything on their plates, which is quite unusual. Then chocolate brownies all round for dessert, which none of them could finished.

In all, we were really impressed with Middletons and would definitely go again. We eat out a lot but have got into a bit of a rut of going to places that are ‘family-friendly’ but a bit cheap and cheerful. While these can be great, it was nice to eat out somewhere that we could equally have chosen had it just been the two of us, and enjoy a meal that was really great quality whilst also suitable for the whole family.
