The Kiddy Guardianfix Pro 2 looks quite different to a ‘normal’ car seat. Rather than having a harness, it has an impact shield which straps in front of the child with a standard seatbelt. It looks rather like something you might see on a roller coaster (which I suppose bodes quite well for a rough ride) and apparently allows for “rolling over” of the upper part of the body in case of a front-end collision or severe braking, which then puts less strain on the very delicate cervical area in children than with conventional seatbelt systems. I have to admit when I first saw it I was a little dubious and so looked up more info about it’s safety and it seems it’s just as safe as a regular carseat, having been rated top ‘Best Buy’ in Which? magazine’s new international test for Group 1, 2, 3 car seats in December 2012.
The seat looks very comfy and is particularly appealing for children like my daughter who are on the cusp of stages age-wise but a little small size-wise. Iris is desperate to get into a high backed booster like her big brother and this provides a happy medium – she no longer feels like she’s in a ‘baby seat’ but has the extra safety she needs due being a tiddler. She seems much happier in this seat, and doesn’t seem as squashed in. The fact that it turns very easily into a high-backed booster just by taking away the impact shield is great too as it means you know it’s going to fit, how to use it etc. It also has a unique safety component, the Kiddy Shock Absorber (KSA), which absorbs the braking energy acting on the 3-point seat belt and thus protects your child from high impacts.
The seat is very easy to fit and use, and is a lot slimmer than our previous carseat, which is great as we’re so close to becoming a family of five and were wondering if we would manage to fit three seats in! It’s attractive and comes in a range of ten colours.
