- 8 Orrmo Rd, Canvey Island, Essex SS8 8NQ, UK
Canvey Heights is situated off Creek Road, Canvey Island. Travel along the slip road that runs alongside Smallgains Hall / Pavilion, towards Smallgains Pond. There are 2 large entrance gates with small side gate clearly labelled ’Canvey Heights Country Park’. This is a new country park in the process of development.
The Country Park is part of a Greengrid project that aims to transform an old landfill site previously known as Newlands) to the south east of Canvey Island, into a high quality sustainable country park promoting environmental education and an increased awareness of the importance of the River Thames Estuary, the park’s history, culture and environment among its visitors. Canvey Heights will also offer recreational activities for everyone to enjoy and already has opportunities for nature walks.
The area is named Canvey ‘Heights’ because it is used for strolling and dog-walking by local residents who enjoy the dramatic views from its elevated position across the saltmarshes in Benfleet Creek to South Benfleet, Hadleigh Castle, Leigh-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea and across Oyster Creek to a wide endless seascape beyond. Also visible are a wide range of specially designated conservation areas along the estuary. This project aims to give the wider community the opportunity to appreciate these views and take part in activities at Canvey Heights. The environment supports an array of wildfowl such as skylarks, dark-bellied brent geese, and grey plover.
