Roller Derby (Killa Hurtz Girls Team)
We are Chelmsford’s Roller Derby Team. What is Roller Derby I hear you say . . .This is a fast-paced team sport that requires speed, strategy, and athleticism. Roller derby is a full-contact team sport played on roller skates. It is played on a flat oval track, normally marked out in a sports hall or roller rink and skaters wear quad skates, knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and a helmet. Each team has five members skating anticlockwise around the track, with one member of each team designated as the point-scorer (the ‘jammer’); the other four members are ‘blockers’. The aim of the game is for each team’s jammer to score points by overtaking the other team’s blockers. There are rules determining how points can be scored and what kind of hits and blocks are allowed. A competitive match, lasts for an hour, divided into two-minute plays known as jams, with a half-time break. We were the 2015 British Champs trophy winning Roller Derby Team based in Chelmsford. We are always looking for female skaters to come and join us!
If you ladies would like to get involved but are not keen on skating or physical contact, then we offer non skating referee training, who are just as valued and a part of the Killa Hurtz family as the skaters.
Still not sure and need to read more? go to Listen to our Ladies page and read all about Tracy’s experience of being a Roller Derby Newbie!
