Story Sticks

A simple but fun idea for helping children come up with story ideas. Start with coloured lollipop sticks, or paint them yourself – ideally around 20 each of four colours. Each colour represents a different aspect of the story. In this instance, the creator used the yellow sticks to represent the main character on the yellow stick, the green stick features the setting, the red stick a conflict or problem to solve and the blue stick a special item or event. You can be as creative as you like – make up your own ideas or draw on familiar and favourite stories for inspiration.

Mix all the sticks up in a jar then pull out one of each colour: use these as the starting point and see where your story leads.
