I love this idea, found on questartists.blogspot.co.uk and inspired by the illustrator Aaron Meshon. Meshon designs maps, children’s products and editorial illustrations that are quirky, brightly coloured and fun to look at, full of imaginary creatures and hidden details.
Children can take a look at his work and use it as inspiration to create their own maps – it can be as local or as broad as they like – just their street or the whole world, and full of things that mean something to them. They might like to add details of where their friends live, some of their favourite places to visit as a family or even places they have been on holidays. Make them colourful and as full of detail as they like whilst still keeping the idea of it fundamentally being a map.
