Creating a family playroom

Guest Blog

Anyone thinking about creating a family playroom in their home needs to consider several things before starting.  The playroom must have adequate space for children to play in, an area in which adults can relax, and enough seating so the entire family can spend time together.  While creating a playroom might require a room to be completely renovated, in many cases just few simple changes to an existing room is all that will be needed, allowing the homeowner to create the perfect space for play even on a tight budget.

Books

A good selection of books is an important component of any playroom.  Books help to educate children while also entertaining them, and can help to transport even younger children to new and exciting places.  There does not have to be a whole library in the room, but a couple of shelves filled with a good selection of books which are appropriate for the reading levels of the children in the family should be able to fit into even the smallest playroom.  Placing comfy armchairs near a window with a table in between will create a relaxing and comfortable space for children to sit and enjoy their reading time.

Art area

If the children enjoy painting or drawing consider setting up an area for them to work in containing an easel and art supplies.  Chalk boards are also fun and can be reused time and again.  It is possible to buy a special paint that will allow the homeowner to create a DIY chalkboard which can be used to cover a wall or even the inside of a door.  Place colouring pens and pencils throughout the art area, and have pads of paper ready for children to use when the creative bug bites.

Games

If there is plenty of space in the playroom a games table is an excellent idea, particularly if the children are older.  A pool table will take up less room than a snooker table, and can be a great way to pass hours at a time.  A table tennis table or air hockey game is great fun for both children and adults alike.

Simple storage solutions

Toy box seating is a great way to save space in a smaller playroom.  Toy box seats are easily constructed without the need to hire a professional as they simply consist of a wooden box with a hinged lid.  These seats can be built in any size to fit any space and are excellent storage solutions for smaller toys and dolls; a few cushions or seat pads on the top help to make for a comfy place to sit.

Windows

Window dressings are also important in a playroom and in most cases should be kept as simple and as colourful as possible.  Blinds and shutters are easy to clean and simple to open and close.  If possible, cordless blinds should be installed in playrooms where small children will be spending time.  If it is not possible to buy cordless blinds, the blind cord can be tied back using a simple hook so that it is out of reach.  Families with smaller children will need to be safety conscious when it comes to the blind cords; if they are not kept fastened back safely a small child can easy get caught up in one with devastating consequences.

Do not fasten toys or mobiles to the blinds or blind cords as this will encourage a child to go near them, and keep cots and high chairs away from the window areas for extra safety.  A Reading customer can visit any one of the local DIY stores for hints and tips on creating playrooms that are as safe as possible.
