As an initiative of people from the local community Wellgate Community Farm came to life in 1982 on a 1.5 acre wasteland granted by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in the form of a management agreement. The name Wellgate was derived from the local areas of Chadwell Heath and Marks Gate. In 1984 the farm achieved charity status. In 2002 the Farm was able to gain a long-term lease from the Local Authority, which included a further half acre of land. In 2003 Wellgate Community Farm became incorporated.
Purpose
To provide a focus for community activity as a growing place for individuals and groups.
Aims
To provide opportunities for all through education, training, therapy and recreation by becoming involved in any aspect of Farm life.
To maintain and develop good farming practice with particular emphasis on animal welfare.
To encourage access for all, whilst sustaining a balance between the needs of the farm and those using it.
To recruit and train volunteers to maintain and develop the Farmβs activities.
To raise funds necessary for the progress of the Farm.
To develop partnerships with statutory and voluntary bodies.
To promote sustainable development, conservation and other environmental issues.
