Newborn Checklist: Things You Need Before Bringing the Little One Home

Having a child is a very stressful time in someone’s life. Many new parents are unprepared to take care of a baby.

Here are a few things you will need to keep baby safe and sound.

1. Nappies

Nappies are an essential part of any parent’s toolkit. Parents should buy a small package of newborn nappies, as the baby will outgrow the newborn sized nappies quickly.

2. A Crib, Co-Sleeper, or Bassinet

A baby’s sleeping arrangements are one of the most important things for a parent to take care of. One must be very careful when a baby is sleeping, as they are susceptible to inadvertently hurting themselves. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is one of the scariest outcomes when a baby is sleeping. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old. While not entirely preventable, the chance of SIDS can be reduced through environmental factors.

Parents need to make sure babies sleep on their backs, do not overheat, and do not sleep on a soft surface.  Parents need to buy a crib, co-sleeper, or bassinet that has a firm mattress, and walls so that the baby does not roll out while they are sleeping. In addition, a parent should only place a sheet that is tight on the mattress in the crib with the baby. This prevents the infant from accidentally hurting itself with other objects or a bundle of the sheet. The crib, co-sleeper, or bassinet a parent chooses should allow the baby to stay safe while resting.

3. A Car Seat

Car seats are also very crucial for a child’s safety. While choosing a car seat can be very difficult, you should know that all car seats that are sold commercially are up to government safety standards. There are three types of car seats that a child will progress through as they grow up, an infant seat, a convertible seat, and a booster seat. An infant seat is the most crucial to buy for a newborn baby, as they are used for children up to 35 pounds. An infant seat faces the rear of the car, and can be taken out of the car and carried for easy transportation. The other two types of seats are front facing, and will be used once a child grows up more. To avoid buying three different car seats for one child, parents can buy 3 in 1 car seats. These car seats are able to be transformed into all 3 types of car seats, allowing parents to buy all of the types of car seats they will need for their child with one seat.

While this list does not provide everything a parent of a newborn needs, it does give the most essential items. These all provide your newborn with the safety and comfort it needs. While finding a crib and an infant car seat that fits your budget and needs can be difficult, all ones sold in stores should be safe for use.
