New season of Cinema at Chelmsford Picture House

The new season of cinema at Chelmsford’s Picture House offers a wide variety of film and live production broadcasts. Spring 2017 highlights include ‘The Girl on the Train’, a psychological thriller starring Emily Blunt, which is based on Paula Hawkins’ best-selling novel that shocked the world (2 February). The critically acclaimed ‘The Light Between Oceans’ will be screened on 11 March and is the tale of a lighthouse keeper and his wife who find an abandoned baby on a drifting boat in Western Australia.

 

Star of TV documentaries Louis Theroux, investigates the Scientology cult in ‘My Scientology Movie’ which is screened on 9 February; reviewers called it ‘gloriously funny’, ‘a witty essay’ and ‘provocative in unexpected ways’.  Slightly lighter, but still funny, the third Bridget Jones film, ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ will be shown on 14 February.

 

Tom Johnson, Manager, Chelmsford City Theatres says: “There’s an amazing range of fantastic cinema lined-up for the new season that should appeal to a very cosmopolitan audience, from screenings of theatre and ballet, to arthouse and big budget movies”.

 

Adding to the line-up are live screenings of drama, opera and ballet including two Royal Shakespeare Company productions being re-laid live – the classic ‘Julius Caesar’ on 3 May and the tragic love story of ‘Anthony and Cleopatra’ on 24 May.

 

Ballet lovers will be spoilt for choice with seven productions being shown live; highlights include ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ on 28 February, ‘Woolf Works’ on 12 February and ‘Jewels’ on 11 April – all direct from the Royal Opera House. Productions from The Bolshoi including ‘Swan Lake’ on 5 February, ‘A Contemporary Evening’ on 19 March and ‘A Hero of Our Time’ on 9 April.

 

Opera has two dramatic treats in store, Verdi’s ‘Il Trovatore’ screened live from The Royal Opera House on 31 January and ‘Madama Butterfly’ on 30 March.
